Lyric: I knew this one young girl who'd tell the trees and the grass
To read us all their favourite stories till we'd kiss and we'd laugh.
And we'd write to the Devil, tell him he's a bad influence
'Cause it's not worth playing God when you're the story in the making.
(Love, love)
Analysis: We intend to amplify the lyrics in our music video by having our first shot of a girl playing with two dolls. This little girl will be involved in the cross cutting scenes of the sequences, theoretically representing the boys actions. Interestingly, the first part of the song is written in the future tense as if he is explaining his expectations for the date ahead. He appears anticipatory as he mentions ‘We’d kiss and we’d laugh’. This further enhances the surrealism ideas we intend to portray in our music video with this idea of dreams. The movement demonstrates the unconscious mind and therefore in relationship to the lyrics we have chosen to represent this through the cross cuts of the Barbie doll setting up the date to the cross cuts of the reality of the boy, stood up and still waiting for his date to arrive.
Lyric: Tiptoed through the crowd and tiny faces I can't bear,
'till I tripped and found your body at the bottom of the stairs.
And the girl just left me shaking, in the corners of my room.
While your face is changing color, it's the story in the making.
Love
Oooooh ooooh, oooooh, oooh,
Ooooooh ooooh, oooooh ooooh
Analysis: The lyrics ‘the girl left me shaking’ could infer that he has been stood up by his date after waiting anxiously. He talks about the girl’s face ‘changing colour’ which could perhaps depict her reasoning for not turning up to their date.
Lyric: Lately I've been down 'cause there's a beast under the bed.
And there's always something crawling between my feet and in my head.
I take a long walk to the hospital, but I couldn't stand the smell,
'cause you're always changing color,
the decrease in your hell.
Now I'm trapped between two devils, shiny teeth, and shiny hair,
there's an honest love to find somewhere.
If we don't stop now we'll be dead by summer.
Analysis: The lexical choice of 'changing colour' depicts a progression in his character and the male character is perhaps changing colour, to red which shows his anger but also shows the connotations of ‘hell’ which links to the title off the song ‘Two devils’. The pain of being stood up appears as something he is going to find difficult to get over. The lyrics are in the semantic field of fear with the words, 'crawling' and 'under the bed'.
Lyric: Oooooh, you tell me there's a reason..why our love has collapsed.
Oooooh, we're tiny little creatures..in a canister
Oooooh, you tell me there's a reason..why our love has collapsed.
You tell me there's a reason, why our love has collapsed
You tell me there's a reason that our love has collapsed
It's just a feeling, but I'm linked to that.
Analysis: The repetition of ‘You tell me there's a reason, why our love has collapsed’ emphasises the explicit meaning of our music video. There love his undoubtedly collapsed but only the girl is able to know the reason and it is something that will remain unknown to him.
I have read through the lyrics to my chosen song; 'Two devils' by Dog is Dead and it is clear our video will be disjunctured. Our plan is to add a visual interpretation to the song has only a minor relationship with the lyrics lexical choice and the rise and fall of the music. For example ‘devil’ and ‘bad ‘depict a theme of nightmares which later becomes prevalent in our music video as the boys anger progresses after he realizes he has been stood up after hours of waiting and preparing for his date. We have planned for the boy to show his anger through aggressively smashing the cake he has made along with showing the destruction of other objects that have been involved in the preparation for his date. Furthermore, the little girl who is involved in the cross cut of the video, will slowly cut off the clothes of the male doll to resemble and depict this transformation of aggression that the main boy character is experiencing. The girl’s activity almost acts in parallel to how the boy is behaving. We want to show the little girl setting up a tea party with her dolls which will then cut to the boy himself preparing for his date in reality.
